How shocked were you last Sunday morning when you walked into the sanctuary? For those who missed it, the congregation discovered the sanctuary set-up had been turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise. This graphic sermon illustration was intended to shake up our concept of what "church" is - to get us to think differently about church.
For many, church is a place we go on Sunday mornings (and/or Wednesday nights) because we enjoy how the services speak to us, personally. It's a physical destination where we go to be ministered to, to have our needs met. We've become consumers looking for what feeds us, what fits our tastes and sensibilities. But do we ever see that description of church in the pages of the Bible?
As Pastor Chip continues to lay out a fresh vision for OBCC, his sermon illustration reminds us of the need to think differently - to remember that WE are the church. True church is the people, not the building. In order for that to become a reality, we need to stop "going to church" on Sundays and start "being the church" every day of the week!
